Preserving Stories and Songlines: Strong Young Men and Boys Program

The Yuendumu Strong Young Men and Boys Program.

Within our remote community of Yuendumu, the transfer of stories and song lines from generation to generation is the key to nurturing a strong identity, sense of belonging and a positive sense of well-being among young people. This is Jukurrpa – teaching the old ways to strengthen and develop the new.

The Yuendumu Strong Young Men and Boy’s Program highlighted the positive outcomes of connecting younger generations of men and boys with their heritage as Warlpiri and Anmatyere peoples. The program was held on Country and offered a space for learning, sharing and connection.

The program allowed the fellas to yarn freely, discussing knowledge and experiences from the senior men to the younger generation. They found connections to learn from each other, exploring and learning about the native flora and fauna through the eyes of the Elders. This included insights into the plants used for medicinal purposes, bush tucker, and ceremony. The fellas were interested in learning and understanding the land better and they are now able to pass down this knowledge and share their experience with others, especially their children.

The sacred sites visited throughout the program were deeply connected to cultural stories binding the past with the present. There was a sense of pride among the fellas, with the group having an appreciation for the the opportunity to connect with Country as well as each other.

Warren Williams, a Senior Elder and facilitator said, “Thank you Red Dust, we had a great trip. We need to find a way to get more ‘young fellas’ out on Country.”

The aim of The Strong Young Men and Boys Program provides a space for men and boys to yarn on Country, to reconnect with stories and song lines, to understand rights, rules. & responsibilities, and to ensure that strong culture continues for generations to come.
